Data from hundreds of studies has shown that Active Recall (ie: testing yourself) is the best way to make information stick. That's why every single page of notes on Cerebrum starts with a 'Test Yourself' section containing questions that you should (ideally) have a go at before reading the contents of the page. 

And yes, even if you've never studied the topic before, it's still very worth your while to test your baseline knowledge before starting.
